The scuba mask is the most important thing you need when you are scuba diving or even skimming the surface of the water as a snorkeled. There are a number of different masks to choose from. If you do not buy the right one than you will find it uncomfortable to use and your time underwater will be spent in confusion and discomfort.
Fitting
The first thing you need to do is know how each brand fits to your face. Go to the store and test each one out. You want the skirt around the entire mask to suction cup itself immediately to your face. It needs to be tight enough to keep water out – but not so tight that your face will hurt.
The best way to try on a mask (when not underwater) is to hold it up to your face with the strap loose. Push it carefully to your face and inhale slowly. The air pressure inside should work to keep the mask on. If you are breathing hard to keep it on than you need to pass and try something new.
When you think you have found one that fits there is one more test to try. Keep the mask on your face and tighten the straps. Remember that the strap is used to keep the mask on your face and not to prevent leaks. Make sure it fits comfortably all around when it is tightened.
Leaks
Next you need to test it for leaks. Look at the material that is used for each mask and how it has been designed. If it has a stiff body and tight fit – but a flexible skirt than it will have a hard time leaking and letting water come into it.
Vision
While you are wearing the mask look around you without moving your head. Can you see in every direction? If your vision is blocked at all than you do not want the scuba mask. It is important to be able to see all around yourself so that you can be aware of your surrounding and keep away from any creatures that won’t play well with you.
